Italians know it as Puglia, but the entire world refers to it as Apulia - the region with a long coastline and one that faces the Ionian and Adriatic seas. Even more than that, Apulia is essentially a flatnad with arid expanses, terraces and table lands in water. This tour lets you see the best of what it has to offer, from the high coasts to the plunge steeps into the sea.
The tour starts with your arrival in Bari and a visit of Matera and Altamura, both iconic villages with houses carved in the rock. The small villages of Alberobello, Castellaneta and Polignano come next, known for their unique food specialties and wine tasting events.
Lecce and Gallipoli are the finishing points of the Apulia and Salento tour. You will get to see the old town centres and blend with their ancient Messapian origins, Roman archaeological ruins and Baroque churches and explore the Italian tradition from another angle.
Day 01: Bari Arrival | Welcome to Puglia! Upon arrival at Bari airport meet your driver and transfer to Monopoli. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Monopoli.
Day 02: Castel del Monte & Bari | In the morning, Half day tour of Castel del Monte with private guide. Castel del Monte is different from the other castles in Apulia. The Castle octagonal shape is a complex architectural design, with many symbolic aspects. In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of Old Bari: the marvelous Old City is made of little and narrow "Vicoli" streets. On your tour, you will visit important medieval sites: the Swabian castle, the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Basilica of San Nicola. Return to Monopoli for overnight.
Day 03: Matera & Altamura | On the way to your hotel in Polignano enjoy a Full day visit of Matera and Altamura. Matera, listed in the UNESCO site it’s the city of the Caverns, of the Entrenched Villages, of the houses carved in the rock, of the frescoed Ancient Churches and noble Palaces. The town resembles ancient Jerusalem and Cappadocia. After lunch, continue to Altamura, inhabited for thousands of year. Here we will discover the history of region and taste one of the most famous bread in Italy: the famous Altamura’s bread. Transfer to Polignano for Dinner and overnight.
Day 04: Alberobello, Castellaneta, Polignano | Full day visit of Alberobello. The town was founded in the 15th century on land that was originally an oak forest. A typical series of structures of Alberobello are the trulli, made by white dry-stone houses with conical lapidary stones roofs. The trulli have a central square room which communicates with the other rooms via arches. Continue to Castellaneta and enjoy a unique Food and Wine tasting. Return to Polignano for overnight.
Day 05: Ostuni & Otranto | Transfer to Lecce via Ostuni, the “white city” and Otranto, the closest town to Greek coast. Ostuni is one most caratteristic cities in southern Italy famous for its whitewashed houses. The town is a genuine example of Mediterranean architecture with a lot of Greek influence. Walk down the tiny staircases, small roads and alleys. Here from every arch and from any corner it’s possible to enjoy either the view of blue sea or the green countryside. You will continue to Otranto where Greek, Roman, Norman, Swabian and Spanish over the centuries engaged in economical and cultural exchanges. Reach Lecce where you will spend the night.
Day 06: Lecce | Wake up in this charming town. Today enjoy a walking tour of the beautiful town of Lecce, definitely one of the most beautiful art cities in southern Italy. Referred also as the “Florence of the South,” Lecce can astonish and intrigue visitors and locals alike with its ancient Messapian origins, Roman archaeological ruins, Baroque churches and 16 century Palazzos. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Lecce.
Day 07: Day at Leisure or Optional Tour: Gallipoli | Breakfast at the Hotel. Meet your driver and Guide at the hotel lobby. Today you will visit Gallipoli. The old town centre sits on a tiny island connected to the mainland by a 17th century bridge. It is almost completely surrounded by defensive walls, built mainly in the 14th century. The east side is dominated by a robust fortress dating back to the 13th century, but largely rebuilt in the 1500s when the town fell under Angevin control. These fortifications tell us a lot about Gallipoli’s history: thanks to its strategic position, it was frequently under siege. Founded, so legend tells us, by Idomeneo from ancient Crete, the town soon became part of Magna Graecia and remained so until Pyrrhus, presumably following one too many disastrous victories, was defeated by the Romans! The island heart of Gallipoli is home to numerous impressive Baroque churches and aristocratic palazzi, testament to the town's former wealth as a trading port. A labyrinthine weave of narrow streets all eventually lead to the broader sea-front promenade with its wonderful views. Late afternoon return to your hotel in Lecce. Overnight in Lecce.
Day 08: Bari Departure | Unfortunately it is time to say Arrivederci. At your convenience we will transfer you to Bari airport. Ciao!
