Tour Description

You may have seen it on postcards, watched it on documentaries or read about it in local newspapers. Cinque Terre is probably one of the most magical places in Italy that perfectly sums up the Italian architecture mixed up with the long tradition, the amazing wines and the fresh sea breeze that puts a special accent to the entire story.

In this 8 Nights/9 Days Tour, you will be able to see, taste and explore every bit of Cinque Terre, but also go beyond the place and visit Portofino, Rapallo, Tigullio and Santa Margherita Ligure, all picturesque and iconic coastal places in Liguria.

The tour continues with a visit to some of the oldest castles in Italy such as the Lunigiana Castles and Borgos, La Specia and the Gulf of Poets in a private guided tour.

Detailed Itinerary

Beyond Cinque Terre Tour | 8 Nights/9 Days

Day 01: Pisa 0r Milan Arrival | Welcome to Italy! Upon arrival at the airport please proceed through the Passport Control and collect your luggage inside the customs area. Just outside this area meet your driver who will transfer you to your Hotel in Sestri Levante. The rest of the day is at leisure on the Tigullio Gulf. Overnight in Sestri Levante.

Day 02: Portofino & San Fruttuoso | After breakfast at the Hotel, meet your driver and private Guide in the lobby for a Private Tour of Portofino and San Fruttuoso. From Portofino together with your Guide trek to San Fruttuoso. This small fishing village located in a bay at the foot of Mount Portofino can be reached only by boat or on foot, following the trails in Portofino Park. The site is dominated by the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, a splendid 8th century monument. Near the abbey you’ll find a church, a tower, a few cottages, and a small beach. Enjoy a swim or some sunbathing. An underwater statue of Christ, known as the Christ of the Depths, stands at the bottom of the bay. Return to Portofino by Boat. Lunch and rest of the afternoon at leisure in Portofino. One of the most popular resort towns on the Italian Riviera, little Portofino has just over 500 permanent residents. But that all changes on summer days when the sun is shining and the yachting set drops anchor in the harbor to wander about. Boutiques, art galleries, cafes and restaurants line the tiny streets. Visit the Church of San Giorgio and take a stroll down to the lighthouse. Late afternoon, transfer back to your Hotel. Overnight in Sestri Levante.

Day 03: Cinque Terre Private Guided Tour | Breakfast at the Hotel. Meet your Private Guide at the Hotel Lobby for a Private Tour of The Cinque Terre (5 Lands), featuring some of the Mediterranean's most picturesque seaside villages. A combination of easy walks, village visits, train rides and a short boat trip between the atmospheric villages makes this the ideal visit to the Cinque Terre. Lunch in a characteristic Liguria restaurant. Your private Guide will share great stories about each charming village, as The Cinque Terre is a string of five fishing villages perched high on the Italian Riviera, which until recently were linked only by mule tracks and accessible only by rail or water. An ancient system of footpaths is still the best way to visit the five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Late afternoon return to your Hotel. Overnight in Sestri Levante.

Day 04: Sestri Levante at Leisure | Breakfast at the Hotel. Today spend the day at leisure in Sestri Levante. Overnight in Sestri Levante.

Day 05: Sestri Levante →  Lunigiana | After breakfast at the Hotel, meet your driver in the lobby for a Private Transfer to your Hotel Castle in Lunigiana. Overnight in Lunigiana.

Day 06: Lunigiana (Fosdinovo & Licciana Nardi) Private Guided Tour |Breakfast at the Hotel. Meet your Driver and Private Guide at the Hotel Lobby for a Lunigiana Private Guided Tour. In the morning, you visit one of the most fascinating of all the castles in Lunigiana, Fosdinovo castle. It is strategically placed halfway between the peaks of the Apuani Alps and the coast. Today, the descendants of the ancient feudal Malaspina family still live in the castle. The Malaspinas built the castle in the Middle Ages and their fortunes are interwoven with its history. Inside, the frescoed walls and furnished halls reflect what life was like during those times. The tumultuous life of the Malaspina family is full by legends, and, as befitting every self-respecting castle, these legends are full of ghosts, trapdoors and torture chambers. After Lunch/Food and Wine Tour in a local characteristic local Wine Estate, travel to Licciana Nardi. The town dates to the 13th century, when its role was to guard the route to the Passo del Lagastrello. The castle, which now looks more like a mansion, towers over the main square. Look for the bridge that was used by its inhabitants to reach the church without having to encounter the locals. The castle is now a private residence, and not open to the public. However, the owners are personal friends of mine, therefor arrangements may be made to visit the Castle. Some of the ancient fortified walls of the town can still be seen. Today, the main street of Licciana Nardi is filled with small shops, all with colourful painted signs. Look out for the Brunilde, (same owner of the Castle: Architect Brunella Viani) which is part of the initiative, i Laboratori del Parco that supports the production by local artisans of handicrafts using local materials, such as wool and leather. Continue by visiting Tavernelle, a small village in the hills of Licciana Nardi, at 450 metres above sea level. It has a medieval centre with a restaurant, bar, and campsite. In the late afternoon transfer back to your Hotel. Overnight in Lunigiana.

Day 07: Fivizzano, Verrucola and Gragnola Private Guided Tour | Breakfast at the Hotel. Meet you driver and guide at your hotel lobby. In the morning you will visit the old town centre of Fivizzano. You have the choice of visiting a number of different places. There is the very interesting Printing Museum, as well as the church of San Jacopo and Antonio, the little Oratory of S. Carlo, where the eighteenth-century poet Giovanni Fantoni, also known as Labindo, is buried, as well as the Augustinian Monastery, which today houses the municipal library and the small Museum of San Giovanni. After a walk along the Medicean walls, you leave the old town centre to visit the small village of Verrucola, which is dominated by the stately Verrucola Castle, which can be visited by appointment only. In the afternoon, after lunch in a characteristic local restaurant continue your private tour by visiting one of the most charming Romanesque churches in Lunigiana - the church of the Saints Cornelio and Cipriano of Codiponte. In this building we discover a set of columns with carved figures dating back to medieval times. Your tour finishes with a visit to L’ Aquila Castle, which overlooks the medieval village of Gragnola. Originally the fiefdom of the Malaspina Marquis of Fosdinovo, today it has been completely restored. From the castle it is possible to enjoy breathtaking views of Pizzo d'Uccello (1781m), which soars into the sky behind the castle. In the late afternoon transfer back to your Hotel. Overnight in Lunigiana.

Day 08: Lunigiana at Leisure | Breakfast at the Hotel. Today spend the day at leisure. Overnight in Lunigiana.

  • Thank you for coordinating such a wonderful trip in Italy. Terence and I learned many things about Italy. The weather was great and we had so much fun. All hotels, staff and guides were superb! We especially appreciated our driver who served us from Venice through our time in Florence, I believe his name was Lorenzo. Again, thank “you” for doing such a great job in planning our vacation.

  • Hope, you are doing well. My wife and I had a great trip to Italy. The place, the people, and the food and wine were out of this world. Warm and kind people including hotel staff, tour guides and drivers went beyond their ways to help us and make this visit very special for us. It was very hard to leave Italy. You, your staff and company did an extraordinary job. You over delivered. Bravo!

  • We have just returned from our trip to Italy since we took a cruise after the program you and I put together. I just wanted to let you know that everything you planned worked out perfectly. Both hotels were excellent and the rooms were fine. All the drivers were on time and got us to our destinations promptly. We were especially glad to have someone meet us at the train station with the tickets in hand and directions to our car in Milan. The best part of the trip was the all day private boat trip in Bellagio with the great restaurant on the private island. So thanks for your help and hopefully we can do it again.
