Going on a trip to Italy is on most people’s list of dream vacations. However, if you don’t plan ahead, you could end up with a nightmare of a trip. Here’s what you should know before you set out for the vacation of a lifetime:
Keep cash handy
A lot of places in Italy still deal in cash. While you can probably use plastic in the country’s busy metro, that’s probably not going to cut it if you find yourself in a quaint rural town. There’s nothing more lamentable than seeing souvenirs perfect for family and friends back home, but be unable to buy because you didn’t bring enough cash with you.
Go on a guided tour
If you want convenient and hassle-free travel, opt for a private tour guide in Italy to help you see as much of the country as you can. You can set a free day or two to allow for a breather in between the tours.
Don’t think the waiters are rude
In some places, waiters show up every 90 minutes to ask you how your dining experience is doing. That’s not the case in many parts of Italy. So don’t think they’re rude. It’s just their way of allowing you to eat your meal in peace. After all, if there’s anything you need, you can always call them to your table.
Buy a ticket before coming on board
In many cities, you can just buy a ticket on board the bus. Things don’t work the same way in Italy, though. In some places, you’ll need to get the ticket first before you step on the bus. Otherwise, you’d get fined.
Be on the lookout for free gifts
When you stroll through the streets of Rome or Venice, you might find yourself besieged by strangers trying to give you free gifts. Decline them. If you don’t, you’ll be expected to hand over the payment for the free gifts. Some even charge outrageous amounts. Don’t fall for that scam. Go on your way and they’ll leave you alone soon enough—at least until the next time.
There is no Italian food
If you think Italy is the land of pizza and pasta, you’d be surprised to know that each region is particularly known for a different cuisine. So if you’re a foodie, you’re sure to have fun going on a culinary adventure in Italy.
